  • What do you choose to do by hand or the old-fashioned way, even when there’s a faster alternative?  Why?
  • Do you sense a trend for returning to doing things by hand?  Is the old-fashioned way too romanticized?

I spin yarn. I hoped to write something about it, but I’m short on time. I am a student of writing, and the more I write, the more I need to let strands of fiber slip through my hands at just the right pace, sitting at the beautiful spinning wheel. It SEEMS practical, until I confess I never really knit up much of it— I’m learning to weave, since weaving uses yarn more efficiently, and scarves offer a good home to handspun yarn.

The beauty of a community like this? I don’t need to find a reason for spinning yarn. My hands need this experience of beauty.
